Force-Free Training and Behaviour Modification

Why do we, at Place for Paws, put so much emphasis on force-free and positive reinforcement methods of training and behaviour modification? Firstly, we believe that hurting, scaring, or intimidating dogs to get them to do something is unethical, unkind, unncessary and very harmful. Secondly, we strongly believe that building a relationship of trust and understanding between a human and their dog is much more important than making a dog do ‘tricks’. Lastly, we believe that any form of training and behaviour modification should be done to assist dogs to cope in our human-centric world, and can be done effectively through humane, ethical, and reward-based methods.

Let’s briefly have a look at the core differences between force-free/positive reinforcement/rewards-based training and behaviour modification and aversive/balanced/positive punishment/negative reinforcement methods.

  1. Force-free/positive reinforcement/rewards-based methods:
    • Using rewards to encourage a specific behaviour.
    • Focusing on patience, trust, clarity, encouragement, kindness, and guidance to encourage a dog to learn.
    • Reinforcing desired behaviours.
    • Taking the dog’s emotional state, previous experiences, external environmental conditions, and the dog’s age and breed into consideration when training.
    • Encouraging a relationship of love and trust between a dog and their guardian.
    • Using methods that are based on how dogs learn.
  1. Aversive/balanced/positive punishment/negative reinforcement methods:
    • Using equipment such as choke chains, shock collars, slip leads, prong collars, spray bottles, shaker cans, invisible fences, anti-barks systems or any product that hurts, surprises, intimidates, or scares an animal.
    • Using behaviours such as yelling, smacking, kicking, rolling, pulling, or holding the dog’s mouth closed.
    • Using any methods that is aversive to the dog i.e. something that is unpleasant or uncomfortable to the dog.
    • Doing anything that may cause a dog emotional, mental, or physical harm.
    • Focusing on terms and definitions such as assertive; dominant; alpha; pack leader.

While the use of aversive methods may yield results, such as preventing a dog from pulling on a lead, there are many far-reaching and damaging side-effects. Using punishment to get your dog to do something will only lead to a breakdown in your relationship with him, and will increase your dog’s levels of fear and anxiety, even when not being trained. Research has shown the aversive training methods can also increase the potential for an inihibition in learning, as well as fear-related and aggressive behaviours. This in turn may lead to an increase in injury to other animals and people.

Research into the use of aversive-based training methods clearly shows that balanced training or training using positive punishment or negative reinforcement (both aversive-based) results in a decrease in the welfare of companion dogs [de Castro et al., 2020]. Science-based studies like these are essential in the world of animal training and behaviour modification, as they provide factual evidence that animals experience less stress and have better levels of welfare with training protocols that utilise positive reinforcement, or reward-based methods. The study by De Castro et al. (2020) provides data-backed research showing that companion dogs trained using aversive-based methods were in tense stats during training, showed higher levels of stress-induced cortisol levels post-training, and exhibited a greater frequency of stress-related behaviours (lip licks, yawns). In addition, the results indicate that aversive-based training causes emotional distress. Dogs trained using reward-based methods showed significantly fewer stress-related behaviours during training, as well as lower post-training salivary cortisol levels. The first empirical study of its kind, this research clearly highlights the benefits of rewards-based training for the welfare of dogs, both during training and post-training.

There are no positives to using harmful methods to train your dog. Focusing on developing a trusting relationship with your dog will yield so many positive benefits, for both you and your dog.

We’ve compiled a list of all the registered force-free professional behaviour consultants across the country. Each behaviour or trainer on this list is committed to using force-free protocols.
